Maritime Restricted Operators Certificate (MROC)
The minimum requirement for commercial operators and users of MF/HF (SSB) radio
(a) The VHF qualification offered by Coastguard covers Very High Frequency (VHF) operation only and does not travel offshore.
(b) Coastguard can also supply - at a nominal extra cost - the MROC, which covers both VHF and Single Side Band (SSB).
(c) Authorised Radio Examiners of the Radio Spectrum Management service, Ministry of Ecnomic Development, can issue the MROC. Canterbury Maritime Training offers both qualifications, at the pleasure of the individual. Because of the course materials and processes required by Coastguard Boating Education Service it is less expensive and faster turnaround (about 3 days as opposed to a fortnight) to sit the latter (government) MROC exam.
