Here are a selection of useful videos I have personally selected from Youtube.com. They make good discussion points.

1 - Lyttelton Marina - our local marina!

Oct 2008. I took this video when I heard a southerly has stalled above Banks Peninsula.

The southerly winds funnel through the damaged marina, the breakwater 'broke up' and now the swells come through the yachts.

I have been on board with my family in these conditions, unless you tie you yacht to the marina with huge ropes they break free causing damage to themselves and other yachts. In 2000 the marina was re-built but a southerly storm blew it away, sinking 30 yachts. We wait for a new marina...The footage was taken by me then given to the Press, I jumped on board these yachts to try & save then, we saved a H28 only that day. Its actually quite upsetting a watch a yacht sink, yours or not, old or new, just seems wrong.

2 - Yacht Capsize - This is quite interesting, what would you do to avoid this happening to you?, easy to get blown in to a bay like this, motor packs up & you cannot tack out because the swells keep pushing you back, the answer - anchor, anchor, anchor, then throw out another, then mayday.Interesting points, the yacht's companion way doors should be closed. The yacht self rights very well, ropes around the prop may of caused the engine to stop, the rescue motor boat is not self righting.

3 - Big boat knockdown Part 1 - Spinnaker release - dont release the halyard when you broach - just the sheets. The yacht gets pinned down here, watch the dangerous gybe then broach too.

4- Big boat knockdown Part 2

5-Big boat knockdown Part 3

6 - Correct use of spinnaker sheet release. The quick thinking of this crew saved the day, notice how the helmsman looses control of the steerage when the rudder is lifted out the water? Good crew practise & communication saved the day.

7 - Starboard right of way or pass port to port? This interesting and clearly both skippers thought they were in the right or the 'stand on' vessel, they are traveling at speed, what would you do?

8 OK, we also cover towing a vessel in our advanced learn to sail, however we suggest you don'y try this!

9 - AIS Demo - so whats all the fuss about? Have you heard about the new navigation aid for your chart plotter?
